I think at the end of the day still depends on how alert is the drive. An alert driver should have able to know whether the head lights is being turn on or off (it should be quite obvious especially at night even the whole street is fill with street lights), this is all depends on individual. If a driver is not alert by himself or herself, not matter how many indicator that having in the dashboard, still useless...

Share a real time story with you, once I was in a friend's car and notice the battery indicator is lights up all the while, and I ask him, is your dashboard problem otherwise should you check your battery whether is weaken or have some problem with the electronic supply...But the answer is ......

Eh? never notice there is indicator light over there... and ... didn't that this battery indicator is light up to show you the battery is in good condition that it can still have lights on it ....(doh~~)

YKH:
yes, indeed the car manufacturer need to do some counter measure, some permanent counter measure for it. To be alert by driver still not the most affective ways. Must come out some Poka Yoke Methods to prevent failure/mis-attention happened.

i think Myvi also have similar system. It is very useful for the dashboard light to on once engine started, but as you say some people may not aware or realise to switch on the car light during downpour. Silver colour car especially is very hard to be seen during heavy downpour.

The dashboard light will dim abit once the car light is turn on. The only solution for now is be more vigilant and pay attention to the dashboard car light symbol whether got turn on or not. Or manufacturer may add some LDR to flash some signal to driver to turn on carlight if too dark.
